Privacy Policy

Gist ("the extension") is a browser extension that summarizes web pages and YouTube videos. We designed it to collect as little as possible. This policy explains exactly what happens to your data.

What Gist stores

• Your OpenAI API key is stored locally on your device (Chrome local storage). It is never sent to us or any third party other than OpenAI. It is sent only to api.openai.com to generate your summaries.
• Your settings (chosen model, custom prompt, transcript service URL) are stored in Chrome's synced storage so they follow your Chrome profile. They contain no personal information.

What Gist sends, and to whom

Gist only reads or sends anything when you click Summarize (or use the shortcut).

• For a web page: the text of the current page is read on-device and sent only to OpenAI (api.openai.com) with your key to generate the summary. The page text is not sent to us or stored.
• For a YouTube video: the video URL is sent to our transcript service (youtube-summarizer-api-iota.vercel.app) only to fetch that video's public captions (not stored, not sold), and the resulting transcript is then sent to OpenAI with your key.
• Your use of OpenAI is governed by OpenAI's own privacy policy and terms.

What Gist does NOT do

• We do not collect, store, or sell your personal data.
• We do not have a server-side copy of your API key.
• We do not track your browsing or build a profile of you.
• We do not run analytics or ads inside the extension.

Permissions

Gist requests only the permissions needed to read the current page or YouTube video's content and metadata, seek the player when you click a timestamp, fetch captions, and call OpenAI with your key. See the store listing for a per-permission explanation.

Data retention

Your key and settings live on your device until you remove them (uninstalling the extension or clearing its storage deletes them). Page text and video URLs sent for summarizing are processed transiently and not retained.
